Gelion owns a significant patent portfolio with patent families protecting various aspects of our technology, ranging from coverage of individual cell components and cell design to manufacturing processes and battery management systems.

Gelion has sought to protect these IP rights key global battery markets with our portfolio, preventing encroachment of our IP rights by competitors and maintaining our technological advantage in the battery space. Gelion’s long-term vision is to become Australia’s leading global energy storage company.

We plan to achieve this through our end-to-end innovation in next-generation lithium-sulfur, silicon-sulfur and zinc battery technologies, BESS integration solutions and novel battery recycling technology.

Gelion is developing its core technologies – sulfur-batteries, zinc-batteries, and recycling process technology in-house and plans to leverage partners to reach commercial scale.

Gelion is also leveraging state-of-the-art battery technology from 3rd party providers to service specific stationary storage market segments in Australia. These systems will integrate externally produced cells into battery energy storage systems (BESS), using Gelion’s integration solutions team’s expertise, battery management systems and management software.

To do this, we are developing next-generation batteries and will partner with leading companies to reach commercial scale to ensure maximum impact. Gelion will partner to reach technology development objectives (evidenced through the Ionblox JDA for silicon-sulfur battery development), as well as for strategic upstream supply chain, prospective trial and offtake opportunities (evidenced through the Glencore JDA).

Gelion is innovating battery technologies for both mobile and stationary applications, targeting a range of sectors and applications, including drones/UAVs, commercial e-aviation, electric passenger vehicles (EVs) and electric heavy vehicles.

Currently, Gelion’s efforts are directed at the potential for the Li-S chemistry to deliver double the gravimetric energy density of standard lithium-ion chemistries, whilst concurrently reducing cost and increasing safety. Gelion is targeting the EV and e-aviation market, to help make global transport, energy consumption and storage more sustainable. Gelion is developing a product for its high energy density sulfur cathode at its expanded R&D facilities in Sydney, enabling it to integrate with a variety of anodes ranging from graphite to silicon to lithium metal, depending on the targeted application. Gelion recently also expanded in the UK by acquiring OXLiD Ltd, significantly increasing its capability in cathode improvement thereby accelerating path to commercial partners and commercialisation.

In December 2024, Gelion was awarded a c.£2.5m (A$4.8m) grant by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) as matched funding to implement its Advanced Commercial Prototyping Centre (ACPC) Project in Sydney. The ACPC Project will enable the Group to produce and optimise its next generation GEN 3 Lithium Sulfur (Li-S) and Silicon Sulfur (Si-S) battery technologies and provide these for test and validation by prospective global partners and customers. Gelion is also adapting its zinc technology.to comprise an alternate cathode technology – a zinc hybrid cell – to develop complementary next-generation batteries for the lead-acid ecosystem. Early testing indicates that this solution can maintain good energy density levels with enhanced cost and safety aspects. Once fully developed, Gelion intends for its zinc technology to provide a durable and sustainable market extension within the ecosystem that supports lead-acid batteries.
