Sustainability at Gelion

End-to-end battery innovation today, shaping the climate of tomorrow.

Our activities tackle sustainability in multiple ways:

  • Gelion’s battery technologies leverage abundant materials such as sulfur and zinc as a substitute to traditional rare earth metals used in incumbent battery technologies, alleviating supply chain constraints of critical raw materials.
  • Gelion’s Integration Solutions support customers in carbon-intensive industries to optimise power use, maximise the use of renewables and minimise costs.
  • Advanced hydrometallurgy solutions to improve the efficiency of critical metal recycling from battery production scrap and end-of-life-cells.

Gelion is committed to high-quality environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. Our ESG Committee, which is now included within the Board meetings, reviews and updates our approach to ensure alignment with ESG objectives. As a business, employer, and clean technology leader, we hold ourselves accountable for meeting these goals across all operations.

As stewards of this transformative journey, we have aligned our mission and values with six of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG’s)

By contributing to UN SDGs’ 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13, we are focused on reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

To achieve universal access to energy by 2030, it is essential to accelerate electrification, increase investments in renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, and implement supportive policies.

Gelion’s battery innovation directly supports this goal by ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services (Target 7.1) and increasing the share of renewable energy in the global mix (Target 7.2).

Through collaboration with strategic international partners across various industries, Gelion aims to enhance cooperation in clean energy research and technology (Target 7.a) and expand infrastructure for sustainable energy services globally (Target 7.b).

UN SDG 7

Gelion recognises the green economy as a vital driver for sustainable development, promoting economic growth and employment while ensuring the health of Earth’s ecosystems. The company is proud to have received the London Stock Exchange’s Green Economy Mark, highlighting its contributions to this global movement.

To support its mission, Gelion implements development-oriented policies that encourage employee professional growth and foster innovation (Target 8.3). For details on the diversity of the Gelion team and initiatives supporting youth education and training, see our Section 172 Statement (Targets 8.5, 8.8).

In FY23, Gelion introduced flexible working arrangements, with over 71% of employees adopting this model. This initiative has improved employee satisfaction and well-being while reducing the company’s carbon footprint by decreasing reliance on emission-producing vehicles.

Gelion also prioritises ethical production practices, working closely with partners to mitigate the risk of modern slavery and minimize negative environmental impacts during manufacturing (Target 8.7).

UN SDG 8

Gelion actively supports Target 9.1 as it is developing high-quality, accessible, affordable, reliable, and sustainable battery technology to promote sustainable economic development across various industries.

Additionally, Gelion’s subsidiary, Battery Minerals Ltd, is focused on advancing sustainable industrialisation by creating more efficient battery recycling processes, contributing to a circular economy in battery production.

UN SDG 9

Gelion’s lithium-sulfur batteries facilitate electrification in aerial and automotive transport by using abundant, recyclable, and conflict-free materials (Target 11.2).

Additionally, Gelion’s battery production process focuses on minimizing downstream emissions, helping customers lower their environmental footprint as they work towards net zero by planning, developing, testing, and deploying zero-emission battery storage solutions.

UN SDG 11

Gelion actively supports Target 12 by promoting the sustainable and efficient production, management, and use of natural resources. The company focuses on using lower-emission, low-impact materials that are abundant, conflict-free, and recyclable at the end of their lifecycle (Target 12.5).

Gelion is also selecting collaborators committed to reducing their carbon footprints. Additionally, the company responsibly disposes of or recycles all industrial, hazardous, and chemical waste (Target 12.4).

To combat food waste and its associated greenhouse gas emissions, Gelion provides office fruit boxes from Good & Fugly, supporting the goal of reducing food waste (Target 12.3).

UN SDG 12

Gelion’s technology focuses on climate mitigation and adaptation, contributing to Target 13.1 by enhancing resilience and adaptive capacity.

Additionally, Gelion’s leadership actively participates in global events and conferences to advocate for the integration of climate change measures into national policies and strategies, supporting efforts in climate change mitigation, adaptation, and impact reduction (Target 13.3).
