Research & Development Technician

Role Overview

Reporting to the General Manager Research and Innovation, the R&D Technician will play a hands-on role in our innovative team as we work at the forefront of battery material development. 
In this role, you will play a vital part in synthesizing cathode active materials, scaling up processes and optimizing electrode formulations. You will support the development of battery technologies through rigorous experimentation, testing and analysis and work closely with the team to create new development pathways. 

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Synthesizing cathode active material
  • Developing and scaling up material synthesis processes 
  • Working with the R&D team to Develop and design battery electrode formulas 
  • Preparing and coating electrodes, including preparation of slurry, coating and drying 
  • Cutting, weighing, stacking and processing electrodes 
  • Assembling test cells such as coin cells, pouch cells and other formats 
  • Supporting analysis of cell performance, lifetime and degradation mechanisms 
  • Researching and optimizing the selection of materials for mattery manufacturing 
  • Troubleshooting processing parameters and material issues in the lab 
  • Presenting results to the team and proposing new development pathways 
  • Maintaining laboratory assembly and testing equipment.

Candidate Profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, chemical engineering, electrochemistry or a related field; OR technical diploma with relevant experience (Essential)
  • Experience working a chemical laboratory environment (Essential)
  • A demonstrable passion for energy storage and renewable technology (Essential)
  • Self-driven and proactive working style with adaptability to changing priorities (Essential)
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills (Essential)
  • Strong commitment to laboratory safety and safe handling of hazardous materials (Essential)
  • Experience in electrode formulation, binder system design, carbon material selection and/or surface preparation (Desirable)
  • Familiarity with electrode characterization methods such as SEM, BET surface area, particle size analysis and porosity measurements (Desirable) 
  • Strong commitment to laboratory safety and safe handling of hazardous materials 
  • Experience in scaling laboratory processes to pilot or production scale (Desirable)        
  • Ability to conduct product-oriented R&D to a high standard within an industrial setting 
  • Skills in process development and validation with high attention to detail.
Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to multi-task and preform duties befitting of position description as required in a technology start up.
